Dubai's Financial Center Paralyzed by Flash Floods
Raging Rain Causes Havoc in Middle East
Unprecedented Downpours Wreak Damage
Dubai, the Middle East's thriving financial hub, has been brought to a standstill as torrential rain unleashed unprecedented flash flooding. On Tuesday, the city was hit by a downpour that dumped a year's worth of rain in a matter of hours.
Roads turned into raging rivers, submerging cars and leaving residents stranded. Photos and videos shared online showed vehicles partially submerged in floodwaters, while homes and malls were inundated. Airports and schools were closed due to safety concerns.
According to the city's weather bureau, Dubai received over 120mm of rain in a single day—approximately the average annual precipitation for the entire year. By the end of Tuesday, more than 142mm (5.59 inches) of rain had fallen, causing widespread disruptions.
The heavy downpours are part of a larger weather system that has affected the Middle East. Other regions, including Saudi Arabia and Oman, have also experienced significant rainfall.
Authorities are working to clear debris and restore normalcy to Dubai. Residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid flooded areas as the flooding poses significant hazards.
