Klobuchar Colleagues Introduce Legislation to Protect Freedom to Vote and Strengthen Our Democracy The Freedom to Vote Act will set basic national standards to make sure all Americans can cast their ballots in the way that works best for them regardless of what zip code they live.
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Joe Manchin (D-WV), and several of their Democratic colleagues in the Senate have produced the Freedom to Vote Act, a stellar election-protection compromise.
This bill addresses voter registration (e.g., automatic and same-day), voting access (e.g., early voting and vote-by-mail), election integrity and security (e.g., auditing and provisional ballots), redistricting (e.g., protecting against partisan gerrymandering), and campaign finance (e.g., disclosure and matching funds).
Specifically, the bill expands access to voter registration; allows no-excuse absentee voting by mail; a minimum of 15 days of early, in-person voting; and on-demand paper ballots. Klobuchar stated, "The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy and should never be denied to someone because of their race, political affiliation, or zip code."
The Freedom to Vote Act is a critical piece of legislation that will help protect our democracy and ensure that every American has the freedom to vote. The bill has already garnered support from a number of organizations, including the Brennan Center for Justice, the Campaign Legal Center, and Common Cause. It is now up to Congress to pass this important legislation into law.
